Super Bowl XLIV: Saints vs Colts – Who to Bet on?

Football fans rejoice, the long wait is over! You can bet on the Colts or bet on the Saints who have both landed in South Florida for Super Bowl XLIV. Opinions will be as plentiful as palm trees in Miami as the week rolls on but stick with the experts at SportsbookReview.net as your trusted source for all things’ sports betting for Super Bowl XLIV. And for those who have yet to pick a sports book to bet with yet, we highly recommend you read our Bodog sportsbook review and Bookmaker sportsbook review for details on two of most highly recommended online sports betting destinations .

The 2009 edition of the biggest single day in sports wagering is loaded with star power and that translates to offensive firepower. You have to go all the way back to Super Bowl XXIII in 1994 to find two teams that can light up the Scoreboard like the Colts and Saints are capable of doing. The Dallas Cowboys led by the “triplets” (Aikman, Smith and Irvin) faced Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and the radical K-Gun offense of the Buffalo Bills in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fast-forward to 2010 and Super Bowl XLIV to find an even greater potential for fireworks with prop bets on all of them. Over the past five seasons, only the Chargers (2,215) and Patriots (2,190) have scored more points than the Colts (2,109) and the Saints (2,000). It’s very understandable that the OVER/UNDER (56.5) is the biggest total in Super Bowl History. The Patriots and Giants total closed at 55 two years ago in Super Bowl XLII. Should the line close at the current Colts -5.5 that will be a Super Bowl first as the number has never closed on a 5 or a 5.5 in the previous 43-year history of the Super Bowl.

With the likes of Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Drew Brees and Marques Colston set to take the field we see both numbers as justifiable. These teams know how to score in bunches and have combined for 165 rushing and 293 passing touchdowns over the past five regular seasons. The Colts have 238 touchdowns in that span while the Saints have 220. The Saints number is brought down by their meager total of 23 TD scored in 2005 (Colts 49 TD).

Both teams are very opportunistic on defense but are also susceptible to big plays. There is one major advantage on the side of the Colts and that’s experience. The Saints will be the 28th franchise to play in their first Super Bowl appearance. Of the 27 previous teams, only eight of them won in their first ever Super Bowl. The 19 teams that lost in their first Super Bowl appearance scored an average of 14.3 points.

Yours truly says the Super Bowl’s outcome will be Colts 31 / Saints 24.

So although the odds are in favor of a Colts win, many sports bettors will have their money on the Saints to make history and be crowned the champions of Super Bowl XLIV. Where will your money be, and which online sportsbook will be your sports betting vehicle of choice for this year’s Super Bowl? Bet on Bodog or Bookmaker to have odds and prop bets on everything from the coin toss, to the first Super Bowl touchdown. Happy betting!
