The Wild & Crazy NFL Fan Base
The NFL is a wild and crazy sport and they have the fans in the stands to match the action on the field.
From crazy tailgate parties that can begin the day before, to fans dressed in wild gear on game day, to fans braving bitter cold, not many sports have supporters that can rival those in the NFL. The competition between NFL fans to represent their team is almost as the competitive as the battle between the teams themselves.
Step Into The Black Hole In Oakland At Your Own Risk
There aren’t many fans that show up to a sporting event like those that support the sad sack Oakland Raiders through thick and thin. Dressed in gear that would scare Edward Scissorhands, Raider fans turn the Black Hole into a Halloween Ball every game day in Oakland.
Raider Nation shows up on game day in their traditional silver and black, their faces painted and wearing more spikes than a Richter scale. Oakland fans are also one of the most traveled groups in the NFL as they head out on the road and pack hotel lobbies wherever their beloved team goes.
Crazy Philadelphia Fans Will Boo Anyone – Including Santa Claus
The fans that pack Lincoln Financial Field are some of the most dedicated in any sport. Dressed from head to toe in green, black and white, Eagles fans organized a semi revolt when management limited parking lot access for tailgating to “just” seven hours before game time.
When the Eagles played a game in December 1968 at Franklin Field they were sitting with a dismal 2-12 record. Despite the record and a nasty snowstorm the stadium was packed with 54,535 rabid Eagles fans. When a halftime Christmas pageant was canceled because of too much snow Philly fans booed and pelted a young fan dressed as Santa Claus with snowballs as he tossed out candy canes.
How crazy can the fans in the “City of Brotherly Love” get? When Lincoln Financial Field opened in 2003 it actually had a jail on the lower concourse level that housed four jail cells just like Veterans Stadium did before it. A calmer, gentler crowd graces Lincoln Financial Field today and the jail cells have since been removed.
The Dawg Pound In Cleveland Is Always Packed
Though it has been several years since the loyal fans of the Cleveland Browns have had anything to cheer about, the faithful legion of the “Dawg Pound” shows up through thick and thin. Located in the east end zone bleacher section the “Dawg Pound” came into its own during the 1985 season.
Fans come to games dressed in brown and orange costumes that include bone shaped hats, dog noses and dog masks. A chant of “Here We Go, Brownies, Here We Go” followed by “Woof Woof” can be heard throughout the stadium. Raucous Cleveland fans often bring milk bones to the game to shower on the opposing team when they are backed up against the east end goal line.
Crazy, zany fans in cities from coast to coast are all a part of the melting pot that is the wild NFL fan base.
