2010 NFL Week 2 Review: Raiders Top Rams, Texans Beat Redskins in OT
Our next set of games featured one of the most boring, low scoring games of the week and one of the most thrilling, highest scoring game of the week. The Oakland Raiders welcomed the St. Louis Rams to the “Black Hole” and dominated them in winning by a deceivingly 16-14 score
Meanwhile, on the East coast, the Texans fell behind 20-7 at halftime and 27-10 late in the third quarter before mounting a comeback charge as they scored 20 unanswered points to win 30-27 in overtime.
Raiders Bench QB Campbell – Gradkowski Shines In Relief – Final: 16-14
It wasn’t quite the homecoming QB Jason Campbell envisioned in his first regular season start in Oakland. The former Redskins quarterback was benched after he went 8 of 15 for just 85 yards and one interception in the first half. Campbell was replaced at the start the third quarter by journeyman QB Bruce Gradkowski who seemed to spark the Raiders.
Trailing 7-3 the Raiders had three consecutive scores including a touchdown and two field goals to take a 16-7 lead late into the fourth quarter. Gradkowski wasn’t much better at 11 of 22 for 162 yards one TD and an INT but he was able to move the team and position them for the win. The Raiders dominated the stats sheet with 404 yards of total offense compared to just 210 for the Rams.
For the Rams part, they looked lost for most of the game and ended up punting seven times. Rookie QM Sam Bradford had a lackluster start as he passed for 167 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The second of his touchdown passes came late in the fourth quarter with the Raiders playing prevent defense to make the score look respectable at 16-14. Running back Steven Jackson accounted for 125 of the Rams 210 yards as he had 75 yards rushing and another 50 yards receiving.
Texans Get Late Wake Up Call – Roll The Redskins In Overtime – Final: 30-27
During the first half of the Washington Redskins and Houston Texans game the Redskins actually looked they were for real following their Week One 13-7 win over the Cowboys. The Texans on the other hand were far from the impressive team that crushed the Colts 34-24 in Week One.
The Redskins jumped out to an impressive 20-7 halftime lead on two 1-yard TD runs by RB Clinton Portis and two Graham Gano field goals. They answered an early third quarter field goal by the Texans with a touchdown to TE Chris Cooley to take a commanding 27-10 lead with 3:59 left in the period. It would the last scoring for the Redskins as the Texans dominated play in the final quarter and into overtime.
This loss has to be put on the defense as the Redskins offense was full marks for their effort with 421 yards of total offense.
The Texans looked out of sorts on offense to start the game as their first possession ended with an interception thrown by QB Matt Schaub after just three plays. On defense Houston looked even worse as the Redskins seemed to move the ball at will as they scored on four of their five possessions in the first half. The Texans defense stiffen somewhat in the second half as they allowed just seven points in the final two periods and overtime.
The Texans looked impressive on offense in the second half has they scored 20 points including a fourth quarter TD drive that went 81 yards in eight plays to tie the game. The tying TD came on a 4th and 10 play when Schaub hit WR Andre Johnson with a 34 yard jump ball pass in the end zone with 2:11 left in the game.
The Redskins missed a game winning 52 yard field goal in overtime and then PK Neil Rackers hit a 35 yard field goal on the Texans ensuing drive to wrap up the improbable comeback and give the Texans their first overtime win in franchise history.
