Last Meeting: New England 45 vs. Jets 3 – NFL Week 13 – December 6, 2010.
NFL 2010-11 Divisional Weekend playoff action wraps as the New York Jets visit New England to battle the Patriots. The Jets are coming off a huge 17-16 win over the Indianapolis Colts during Wild Card Weekend action. The path just got a little more difficult though as they are on the road for the fourth time in the last five weeks.
The Jets were less than impressive as they went 2-3 to close out the season including the 45-3 beat down they suffered in New England back in Week 13.
For their part, the New England Patriots have had two weeks to rest up and have not left Foxborough since a short trip to Buffalo, NY, back on December 26, 2010. No team in the NFL has been hotter than the Patriots over the second half of the 2010 NFL season.
Since a Week 9 “wake up call” 34-14 road loss to the Cleveland Browns, New England has won eight straight games by a combined score of 295-125. Even more impressive, their last five wins have been by a combined 180-47 score. Five of the eight wins were against teams that made the 2010-11 NFL Playoffs.
Much was made of Rex Ryan stating that last weeks’ game versus the Colts was personal between him and Peyton Manning. The Jets barely got past the Colts but Rex continues to poke the cage. The Patriots game is now personal between Ryan and New England head coach Bill Belichick. We like “Billy Ball” in that situation – every time.
Jets CB Antonio Cromartie poured a little gasoline on the fire by bad mouthing Patriots QB Tom Brady and calling him an “a–hole” on Tuesday. We thought the Jets had learned their lesson when the Brady Bunch schooled them back in Week 13, but that is obviously not the case.
New England players and coaches have not been drawn into the fray but instead they have taken the high road – like the professionals that they are. Brady is quoted as saying ‘We’ll see on Sunday night’ and that should be a major cause of concern for Rex and the Jets.
We don’t really like the two score point spread in this one but we are going to swallow it and, as we did with the Bears vs. Seattle, hope against the dreaded backdoor cover. It will be enjoyable watching the Pats put the Jets in their place.
