NFL Free Picks – Dallas vs. Arizona – Saturday Night Football

This may not be the marquee match-up of Christmas past but it still has the potential to be a very entertaining football game.

Dallas opened with a 20-7 halftime lead, pushed it to 27-7 early in the third quarter and then had to kick a late field goal to defeat the Redskins 33-30 during Week 15 action. The Cowboys racked up 434 yards of total offense but saw their big lead evaporate as Washington scored 23 second half points.

The Cardinals meanwhile traveled cross-country to face the 1-12 Carolina Panthers and surprisingly still held a slim playoff hope. That hope was dashed when the Panthers defense came up huge to limit Arizona to just 218 total yards (43 net rushing yards) as Carolina came away with a 19-12 victory.

With neither team playing for much more than pride on Christmas Day, this game is somewhat difficult to handicap. The Cards mailed in their Week 15 effort but may have some fight in front of their home fans. The Cowboys look like they want Jason Garrett to get the full time head coaching position as they have gone 4-2 in their last six games under his guidance.

In instances like this we look to the season statistics to help us out. Dallas has posted 25.3 points per game compared to 18.2 for the Cardinals. Dallas ranks fourth in passing yards at 266.4 per game while the Cardinals rank 24th (228.1) in pass yards allowed. The Cowboys have seasoned veteran Jon Kitna under center while Cards rookie QB John Skelton is making his third NFL start.

If the Cowboys show up with any semblance of defense, this game will be a blowout. We think they will and are calling for a 34-17 Dallas victory. A win that moves them out of the NFC East Division cellar and past the hapless Redskins into third place.
