Fantasy Football 2010 Rankings – Wide Receivers

No position in fantasy football is more likely to produce an over night sensation than the wide receiver position. The Cowboys Miles Austin and Vikings Sydney Rice were classic examples of that during the 2009 NFL season.

Couple that with the fact that there are so many players at the position and ranking the wide receivers is a daunting task. It is especially important to get it right in a points per reception fantasy draft. With the number of catches being huge, you need to draft true number one receivers to have a shot at success.

Fantasy Football Wide Receivers – Rules To Ranking Receivers

Making mistakes while ranking the WR position can be very costly to your fantasy football season. Whether it comes from over or under valuing a WR; if you get it wrong and draft a dud, the next guy in line stands a chance to get a stud.

Two classic examples of putting too much value on a WR in 2009 were Buccaneers WR Antonio Bryant and Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe. After productive 2008 campaigns (Bryant 252 FP – Bowe 230 FP) many fantasy owners expected big things in 2009. It didn’t happen as they both went bust (Bryant 123 FP – Bowe 130 FP).

The parallel between Bryant and Bowe was uncanny as they both had a new, untested QB as well as a new Head Coach with a run first and defensive minded philosophy. Given their situations, both of these players should have been positioned much lower than their actual ranking on most draft day cheat sheets.

Fantasy Wide Receiver Depth Charts Matter

Most teams carry between eight and ten wide receivers on their active roster. Knowing the peaking order and digesting whether the depth chart is accurate is an important aspect of ranking the WR position.

if you tried to rank the Dolphins WR core in 2009 you were faced with four rather mediocre options. Second year WR Davon Bess (4th ranked on the depth chart) ended up as the Dolphins top WR by 56 points over rookie Brian Hartline.

Many hands can muddy the soup. A team like the New Orleans Saints that has three and even four solid options at wide receiver will win a lot football games. The owners of these players fantasy rights may not enjoy the same success.

Marques Colston, Robert Meachem and Devery Henderson combined for 562 fantasy points in 2009. That’s an impressive total on its own but each of those receivers had good and bad games at various points in the season. Picking the one that was going to be the best during any given week was virtually impossible.
