Fantasy Football 2010 Rankings – Tight Ends

The introduction of the “flex” position player eliminated the tight end position in many draft formats a few years back. We always viewed that as a mistake and the recent rise in production from the TE position lends credence to our opinion.

Our belief that the TE position needs to be a separate unit in fantasy football is so strong that we won’t participate in any fantasy draft that doesn’t include them on their own as a separate unit.

Fantasy Football Tight Ends – Give Them Well Deserved Respect

Assuming your league has a separate category for the TE position the question of when to select them becomes an important one. Every year the tight end pool gets deeper and deeper. The years where two or three players dominated the TE position are long gone.

During the 2009 season eight of the top 25 players (based on catches) were tight ends and that number should rise during the 2010 NFL season. Six of those eight tight ends finished with over 200 fantasy points.

There were also just twelve wide receivers with more fantasy points than super stud tight ends Dallas Clark (271), Vernon Davis (252) and Antonio Gates (242). In fact, those three players outscored the likes of wide receivers Anquan Boldin, Greg Jennings and Calvin Johnson to name just a few.

With the TE position getting younger, bigger, stronger and faster heading in the 2010 NFL season a successful fantasy team needs a stud TE to enjoy success. We aren’t saying you should go and get these guys in the first round but you must be mindful of their value and draft them accordingly.
