BC Lions: Reigning CFL Champs Begin Their Title Defense
As a new CFL season dawns, Canadian Football fans will get a look at the defending Champs right out of the gate. The BC Lions are part of the Opening Day Kickoff celebrations on Friday, June 29, 2012. In a grudge match of the 99th Grey Cup game, the Leo’s host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at 10:00 PM ET from BC Place in Vancouver. The Lions return, basically in tact, to defend their title.
Saskatchewan is also a part of the Opening Day celebrations as the Roughriders travel to Hamilton to face the Tiger-Cats in the early game on Friday. The Green Riders are looking to put their woeful 2011 CFL season behind them as they finished last in the West with a 5-13 record. With new QB Henry Burris under center, the Ti-Cats are a Grey Cup Championship betting favorite.
Edmonton & Calgary Host East vs. West Kickoff Weekend Contests
A couple of teams, with new quarterbacks under center, open the new CFL season at home on the weekend. First up, the Eskimos host their former QB as Ricky Ray and the Toronto Argonauts sail into Edmonton for a Saturday night fight at Commonwealth Stadium. After nine seasons as the face of the Green and Gold, Ray will try to jump start an Argos club that went 6-12 last season.
Red and White pride will be out in full force as the Stampeders welcome the Montreal Alouettes to McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Canada Day. CFL scheduled makers saved the best for last as Stamps fans know how to party – even without a National Holiday on the calendar. This contest is a rematch of the 96th Grey Cup Championship that was hosted by Montreal and won by Calgary.
