NFL 2010 – Monday Night Football Preview – Free Picks

New Orleans is coming off of a hard fought battle as they lost 30-24 on the road to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 15 NFL acton. That game had the same playoff type atmosphere that will be found under the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA, tonight.

For their part, Atlanta went on the road and pounded the hapless Seattle Seahawks 34-18. While Qwest Field doesn’t hold the same mystic it has in the past, this was still a nice road win for the Falcons.

The last five games in this series, played in Atlanta, have resulted in a combined score of 137-120 in favor of the Saints who won three of them. The game total was 44 points or more in those fives games and three off them were 53 or more points.

The last five overall in this series have seen the Falcons outscore the Saints by a combined 145-125 but they have only won twice. One of those wins was a 27-24 Atlanta victory over the Saints in the Superdome in New Orleans back during Week 3 of the NFL 2010 schedule. The total points scored has been 49 or higher in those five games including the 51 point total in the Week 3 game.

The scenario is set for both teams. The Falcons will gain a first round bye and home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a win. Home field advantage has been huge for the Falcons, as they have gone 19-3 in games played in their home nest over the last three seasons.

A Saints win earns them a playoff berth and a Wild Card Weekend home game. It also keeps them in line to win the NFC South Division though that is a long shot at best. A loss and the playoff picture becomes a muddy mess with all kinds of crazy things possible. That includes the Saints possibly not making the playoffs at all if they were to lose to the Bucs in Tampa Bay next weekend.

One thing is certain – no game in recent memory has the potential to be a classic than this one does. We have perfect playing conditions, two great teams and playoff positioning on the line. Let’s hope it lives up to the billing!

We have been tossing this one around all day and, once we boiled it all down, we see the defending Super Bowl Champs coming away with a win that they need more than the Falcons do. A 31-24 Monday Night shootout seems about right here.
