Free Picks – Vikings vs. Eagles – NFL Week 16

Free Picks – Vikings vs. Eagles – NFL Week 16: Do you remember that 17-0 beat down the New York Giants handed the Boston Yanks? Of you course you don’t and not many do. That was the last American pro football game played on a Tuesday night way back in 1946 – just a year and 29 days after the official end of WWII.

Due to a heavy snowstorm this past weekend, the Vikings visit the Eagles for Week 16 NFL Tuesday Night Football action.

Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA, hosts this late NFL Christmas Week gift with kickoff slated for 8:00 PM EST on Tuesday, December 28, 2010.

NFL 2010 – Tuesday Night Football Preview – Free Picks

Even the purest of football fans can be forgiven if they can’t remember that day back on October 1, 1946 when Merle Hapes of the Giants rushed for two touchdowns (3 and 8 yards) sandwiching a 36 Ken Strong field goal. The Giants had 44 rushing attempts for 185 yards in that game and the two teams combined for just 114 total passing yards, 27 of them from the Boston Yanks.

We’ve come a long baby!

Fast forward to 2010 and we find the Philadelphia Eagles looking to move closer to home field advantage in the NFC playoffs while the Vikings just want to get out of Dodge.

It has been a strange three weeks (and season for that matter) for the Vikings. In Week 14 the roof of the Metrodome collapsed and Minnesota had to play a home game at Ford Field in Detroit. With their home stadium still not ready, the Vikings played out doors at the University of Minnesota’s TFC Bank Stadium in Week 15. Now they get to play a Tuesday night game. Historically speaking, no team has ever gone three weeks in a row without playing an NFL Sunday game.

For their part, the Eagles got to sit back and relax on Sunday and were handed the NFC East Division crown when the Packers rolled the Giants 45-17 at Lambeau Field. While we don’t agree to a game being canceled due to snow (we remember scraping a foot of snow off the bleachers in Tiger Stadium to watch the Lions battle the Redskins in the 70’s) we can understand the safety factor, to a degree.

The Eagles need a win to keep pace with the Bears and Saints at 11-4 and to keep their hopes for a first round playoff bye alive. Things could still break their way and they could gain the #1 seed in the NFC but that is a long shot at best. If the Eagles take care of business tonight and then next week against the Cowboys and, should the Bears lose to the desperate Packers in Week 17, Philadelphia will be home and cool for Wild Card Weekend playoff round in January.

The Vikings are starting Joe Webb at QB, all world running back Adrian Peterson is nursing a deep thigh bruise and the Vikings must feel like nomads after the past three weeks. Look for the Eagles to play fired up football in front of the hometown faithful and pummel the visitors from Minnesota.
