OK, can we get a quick show of hands from anyone who thought the Seattle Seahawks would be playing football on January 16, 2011? Anyone? Just as we thought – no one – except for a few delusional hippies hanging out at a coffee shop in Seattle. The Seahawks will head out on the road, and across the country, to the Windy City for a battle against the Chicago Bears during Divisional Championship Weekend 2011.
The improbable run continues for the first team, in a non-strike shortened season, to make the playoffs with a losing record. Make no mistake about it, the Seahawks humiliated the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints when they dismantled them 41-36 during Wild Card Weekend. From our vantage point, the win was more the Saints falling short, on the road in the leagues toughest stadium, with an injury riddled team. It will be a different story, especially from a defensive stand point, when the Seahawks head into the Bears Lair at Soldier Field.
For their part, we find the Chicago Bears to be almost as fraudulent as the Seahawks. In a way, this game is like that old Spy vs. Spy black and white MAD TV cartoon from days gone by. The only difference is the name as we view it as Fraud vs. Fraud. Chicago won the NFC North based on an 11-5 record but a closer look shows that they didn’t have very many “quality” wins along the way. They beat the Packers 20-17 in Week 3, the Eagles 31-26 in Week 12 and survived the Jets 38-34 in Week 16. After that, their other eight wins came against teams with a combined 37-75 record.
Seattle made the cross country trip to Soldier Field back in Week 6 and won 23-20 as -6 point underdogs. In that game, Bears QB Jay Cutler was just two weeks removed from the nine sack, concussion suffering, game against the Giants and the Seahawks got to him another six times. At that point the Bears were still trying to run a deep vertical passing offense but have since wised up and Cutler is getting rid of the ball much quicker now with short passing routes. Don’t expect RB Matt Forte to have just eleven total touches like he did in the first meeting as Chicago has developed a much better balance over the last half of the season.
Believe it or not, we have struggled with this game all week long. This has nothing to do with the Seahawks being any good as we just wonder which Bears team and which Jay Cutler is going to show up here. Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck has the mobility of a tree stump and that’s bad news when the likes of Lance Briggs (missed the Week 6 game) and Brian Urlacher are chasing you down. After careful consideration, we just can’t back this Seahawks team, making the long trek to the Windy City, against the well rested Bears squad with payback and a trip to the NFC Championship on minds.
This game won’t be on our betting card on the weekend but if forced, we would take the Yogi’s (based primarily on their superior defense) to win the game and hope that Chicago plays a full 60 minutes to avoid the backdoor cover. Plug your nose and dive in if you must but parlay bettors should be weary of a 27-17 PUSH in this one.
