Let’s say for a minute that you are like 90% of the fantasy population that ranks selecting a D/ST Unit about as important as owning a winter coat in Hawaii.  You should still do a little homework because sleepers dwell with the bottom feeders of this category.

The Saints D/ST was left on the table in most drafts last season but was on the top of the fantasy D/ST scoring heap come seasons end. They didn’t show a lot of hints but a little digging may have uncovered a few nuggets of gold.

Don’t Leave Your Fantasy Team Defenseless

We freely admit we totally missed on the Saints last season but it was certainly a wake up call.

For years we were of the opinion that you should select your D/ST second last and your kicker last. We have bumped both of them up some lately and the D/ST has now found a place in the 15th row of our heart. The main reason for this is we know the value of the position and predicting a D/ST fantasy sleeper is like predicting the weather.

We are now of the opinion that you need a D/ST unit that has some degree of predicability instead of ending up with one that goes bust. A little research goes a long way to making that happen.

2010 Fantasy Football – Top Defense Special Team Units

New York Giants: The G-Men have slipped from one of the best D/ST units to one of the worst a few times over the last five years. We see them rebounding from their lackluster 110 FP in 2009 with a very strong pass rush in 2010.  They will also  face some very suspect quarterbacks during the course of the 2010 season.

Dallas Cowboys: The Boys from Big D have been climbing up the 2010 average draft position list slowly but surely recently. Most of the backing is coming from confidence that their offense will score a ton of points and force teams into making mistakes while they play catch up. We can live that explaination but it also has something to do with the fact that they won’t be facing very many top ranked teams or quarterbacks (five) during the 2010 NFL season.

If you do a little homework and get your D/ST unit somewhere around the 15th round you should be able to plug them in weekly and have just the one bye week to worry about. Whatever you do, don’t back them up until the date of their bye week through the waiver wire.
