2010 NFL Week 2 Review: Steelers Top Titans, Broncos Bust Up Seahawks
We figured Sunday would provide some answers to a few burning questions were pondering. A few of them were answered in this pair of games. We looked at the Seattle’s Week One destruction of the 49ers as suspect and wondered if the real Seahawks team would show up this weekend and they did.
We also wondered if the Steelers defense was really that good after they shut down the high octane Falcons in Week One. It is that good as they stymied the Titans at every turn in Week Two
New Steel Curtain Shuts Down CJ2K – Steelers Win Tricky – Final: 19-11
We forecasted a rough and tumble game here and neither team disappointed us. The Pittsburgh Steelers opened their bag of tricks on the games opening kickoff against the Tennessee Titans and hit pay dirt. On a designed reverse handoff, RB Mewelde Moore handed the ball to rookie wide receiver Antonio Brown and the speedster went 94 yards down the right sideline for a touch down.
Things actually settled down from that point as two field goals by the Steelers and one from the Titans closed out the first half scoring at 13-3 Steelers. The third quarter was scoreless and Steelers PK Jeff Read added two more field goals in the fourth quarter before the Titans scored a garbage time TD and converted a two point convert with under a minute to play.
This one wasn’t pretty from an offensive point of view as the Steelers managed just 127 total yards while the Titans were slightly better with 238 total yards. The most notable number from this game is 34. That was the total rushing yards by Titans RB Chris Johnson which snapped a streak of 12 consecutive regular season 100 yard rushing games.
Ironically, the 34 yard rushing total was the same total CJ2K had the last time he failed to reach the 100 yard plateau in Week Five against the Colts during the 2009 season.
Denver Destroys Seattle – Frauds Exposed – Final: 31-14
We were far from ready to jump on the Seahawks bandwagon after they crushed the 49ers in Week One and we were wise not to do so. The Denver Broncos (who didn’t show much in Week One) pounded the Seattle Seahawks in a game that was never close. Denver held a 17-0 lead at halftime and a 31-7 lead at the 9:17 mark of the fourth quarter.
Seattle managed a touchdown on their first drive in the third quarter that was set up by a 63 yard punt return by rookie Golden Tate. The Seahawks started the drive at the Denver 22 yard line and punched it in on an 11-yard TD pass from QB Matt Hasselbeck to WR Ben Obomanu. Hasselbeck also ran in a 2o yard TD late in the fourth quarter but threw an interception on the Seahawks final drive that sealed an already sealed deal.
Kyle Orton was sharp at quarterback for the Broncos as he completed 25 of his 35 pass attempts for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Denver’s latest version of “lightening and thunder” scored twice on the ground as running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter combined for 137 total yards and a touchdown each.
Looking ahead, we have to say that this is more of what you should expect out of the Seahawks moving forward. The Broncos will face tougher opponents but they have the weapons to stay in most of their games on the 2010 NFL schedule.
